Martina weds and announces retirement - August 2011

Martina married longtime boyfriend Florian Skibbe. From now on her name is Müller-Skibbe.


The two are together for more than seven years. Their son Jonas was born in July 2010 and now they had their wedding.

The pair had their civil wedding with family and close friends on Friday, August 12 and the official church ceremony including the baptism of Jonas the following day. “It was a gorgeous marriage and an excellent party”, the bride said, “Exceptionally I’m very glad, that many of my longtime friends came here to be with us at this special day.


Since March 2009 Martina didn’t play any tournaments, due to a neck injury. She tried to come back several times, but the injury was just too much the last two years.

Therefore Martina announces officially her retirement from professional tennis.


Martina was a one-time WTA champion who made it as high as No. 33 in the world. She played her first WTA main draw in Hannover in 2000.

With her tenacious, grinding style she compiled a strong career résumé, highlighted by winning Budapest in 2002 and finishing runner-up at Palermo in 2007.


She also captured one WTA doubles title in s’Hertogenbosch on grass court, ten ITF singles and ten ITF doubles titles.

Her first Fed-Cup attendance for Germany was in 2001…further followed till 2008. “It always was an honor to play for my home country”, said the 28-year-old. “Also I enjoyed my time as a professional. It was a really good time, that I will never forget.”
